Wintertime blues got ya down?

I don’t know what it’s like where you are but here at Asphault Adventures HQ its cold.    But don’t let the cold get you down, in just under 6 months you could be on the Adventure of a lifetime all culminating in THIS!!


Beautiful Key West Florida!  It’s really an amazing place to hang out, thaw out and celebrate another great rally with friends old and new.

Just a friendly reminder, registration closes Friday March 27th (or when sold out, whichever comes first) and all registered teams must be paid in full by April 30th.

No matter where you’re from or where you’re going, a relaxing stop in Key West should be on your agenda!


Pre-registration details

Ok, we’re almost there with the registration.  A few points of clarity before we open it up.  We are aiming to open registration on December 15th.

The TRABI class ONLY of W2W will start on Wednesday May 27th in a location in the northeastern United States. After 2 days prep time the TRABI teams and their support teams will drive to the W2W start in Charleston WV on May 30th.

The W2W rally (all classes) will Start (Night 0) on Saturday May 30th in Charleston WV.

Depart Charleston May 31, Arrive Nashville, TN

Depart Nashville, TN June 1st, Arrive Robbinsville, NC (Tail of the Dragon)

Depart Robbinsville, NC June 2nd, Arrive Savannah, GA

Depart Savannah, GA June 3rd, Arrive DeLand FL

Depart DeLand, FL June 4th, Arrive Key West, FL

Registration will be open through March 31st.   An application fee will be required at the time of registration.  This fee will be refunded if your application is not accepted.   Other than event cancellation this is the ONLY time a refund would be issued.

Once your application is approved and accepted the balance of your registration fee will need to be paid.  You will have until April 30, 2015 to pay your registration fees.  You may pay in installments if you like but you must be paid in full by April 30th.

There will be TWO charity components to the event.  There will be an overall fundraising effort from each team for a primary charity to be announced shortly.   And one daily challenge to raise funds for a second special charity.  We will not be enforcing any particular goals but the results will have bearing on your teams overall score.


Registration fees:

TRABI Teams -Teams competing in the TRABI class

Application fee: $100

Registration fee: $1000 ($900 + application fee) per 2 person team.

Hotel fee:   $215  Since you will be unable to know where you are starting you will also need to pay up front for the hotels for the TRABI prep time (3 nights) and our team will book this for you.  All other hotels you will book and pay for yourself.

TRABI teams may be 2 person only.  If your application for the TRABI class is not accepted you will be offered the opportunity to join the open or banger classes if you would like.

NOTE:  TRABI class must have at least 5 entrants or entrants will be offered space in the open rally and the TRABI competition will not occur.  TRABI class is limited to no more than 10 entrants.

TRABI Support Teams – Each TRABI team may register one support team of no more than 2 people.  This team may be in open or banger class and may assist the TRABI team during car purchase and preparation.   The TRABI team should register first so the support team will have their name for their registration form.

Application Fee: $50

Registration fee: $500 ($450 + application fee)

Hotel fee: $215  Since you will be unable to know where you are starting you will also need to pay up front for the hotels for the TRABI prep time (3 nights) and our team will book this for you.  All other hotels you will book and pay for yourself.  You may share a room with your TRABI team, please choose the shared room option on your registration form and this fee will be waived and no reservations will be made for the support team.

W2W Open Rally teams:  For open and banger classes competing in the open portion of the W2W rally.

Application Fee: $50

Registration fee: $400 ($350 + application fee) For a 2 person team.  Please add $100 per additional teammate.  Maximum of 4 members per team.

Marshals:  We will be looking to recruit a few good marshals for this event.  The job pays in adventure, and maybe some meals but cold hard cash is out of the question.  We will cover hotel rooms but its 4 to a room so you get to make new friends (or recruit 3 people you like to marshal with you)  Marshals will be riding with the TRABI teams so you don’t need a car but you do need a strong sense of adventure. Sorry we do not provide transportation to the start or home from the finish.  Marshals will need to be available for the entire event starting May 27th and going through June 4th.

To keep things on the up and up we will most likely NOT accept marshal candidates who are or are affiliated with past banger rally teams.  There are a few exceptions to this but very few.  Any cheating on the part of a TRABI team gets them disqualified.  If a marshal is found to be complicit then the team can go after them for their fees.  Come prepared to keep things honest.

Ok ok, I know I’ve been saying W2W registration will open on the 1st of December.  Apologies, its just been rather busy around the HQ with planning and the holidays so I haven’t quite finished up all the reg forms and details.  But while you wait hop over to the FAQ and to the W2W event pages and read up on what’s to come 🙂

Ok, things are coming together so the boss says I can tell y’all a bit more. The W2W rally is tentatively going to happen at the end of May, going into June. Dates will vary based upon if you are in the TRABI class or not. TRABI teams will be meeting on May 27th in an undisclosed location and TRABI and the rest of the rally meet up to start W2W on May 30th.

So…W2W, its West 2 West as in West Virginia 2 Key West. Should be one hell of a drive 😉 TRABI teams will NOT be starting in West Virginia. Teams which are accepted to TRABI will be provided their starting info as needed and should not be planning on any pre-shopping as it will surely bite them in the butt 😉


I’ve been getting some questions and some clarity required on how T.R.A.B.I. class will work for W2W.   TRABI does NOT start in West Virginia, stop shopping!  For those familiar with banger rally day numbering, with Day 0 being the day you arrive to register but Day 1 being the next day where you hit the road let’s look at it like this.

Day -3  TRABI teams arrive in (undisclosed) After registration they will be able to begin their hunts and contact sellers to meet with them the following morning.  Trust me, you think you’ll have this lined up ahead of time but you won’t.

Day -2 TRABI teams head out to buy cars and start prepping them

Day -1 TRABI teams still prepping

Day 0 TRABI teams have a day long drive with some POI visits on the way to the start in WV.  Open and banger class teams will arrive at starting point in WV.

Day 1 All teams hit the road together.

Terrible Really Awful Bad Idea (TRABI) rally.

For awhile we’ve hinted this is coming, now its time to let at least some of this cat out of the bag and see who wants to give it a ball of string…what a terrible analogy.

Anyway…this is a rally for the really hardcore, the deranged, the true banger rally enthusiast.

Entry will be limited to no more than 10 teams, and we may actually make it only 5.

Entry is $1000 per team, but the winner takes half the pool at the end ($2500 if a 5 team event, $5000 if a 10 team event)

It will be a standard 4-5 day banger rally format with one exception.

You can’t bring your car.

Thats right, fly to the start, bring a car and park it, whatever you decide, but you will be arriving 2 days prior to the rally start and have 48 hours to find, buy and prepare your car.

Still with me? (if you chicken out at any point skip to the bottom to find out how you can still have fun)

In your first 48 hours you have a budget of $1000.  You can buy a $1000 car and do nothing, or a $100 car and do $900 worth of work.  You can buy a $500 car and put $100 into it and keep $400 in your pocket, which may come in handy because….

You will then compete in a 4-5 day banger rally with a total budget of $1000 (plus anything left over from your car buy/build budget)

That $1000 must cover all accommodations, food, fuel, car repairs, etc for the remainder of your trip.

Every dollar over budget either on the build or on the trip will cause deductions from your final score.

And how do we keep you honest?  Every team will have a dedicated marshal who will be riding along and managing your money, as well as photographing and journaling your team’s exploits.

This means when you are car shopping you need to account for one more passenger than you have on your team.

So let’s sum up, $3000 of your hard earned cash.  7+ days of your precious time for a 1 in 10 chance to win $5000 (or 50% of the total entry fee for the class)

We’ll throw in some t-shirts, stickers, lots of adventure and maybe a party or two along the way as well as some organization and planning to keep things moving smoothly.

It really is a Terrible Really Awful Bad Idea.   But for a very select few, it’s just the kind of bad idea you are looking for.  If you are one of those crazies running around right now saying TAKE MY MONEY PLEASE, be aware there will be an application process including a video portion to make sure we have just the right kind of teams filling these very limited spots.

I can hear the hamsters firing up the wheels in some of your brains on how you can get around some of these challenges already:

Get someone local to pre-purchase a car for you and have it waiting

Get an inside deal from someone local all set up in advance

Have another rally team “partner” with you to give you free rooms and feed you.

I’m a cheater too, I’ve thought of those things, just stop.  Full rules will be released closer to the event but focus on how you accomplish this clean, don’t look for tricks, tricks are bad…mmmkay?

For everyone else, we didn’t forget you.  We’ll still be running a full 4-5 day adventure rally with banger and open classes in conjunction with this event. Come along to watch the circus with a front row seat and test your adventure rally skills against the other teams.  You’ll get the t-shirts, the stickers, the parties,  and adventures too, just slightly less pain (or maybe more for some of you crazies) in your vehicle selection.

The rally itself will be late spring or early summer and will most likely be east coast based.

More details on the whole rally as well as the TRABI class to come but I know there will be a lot of questions and teams will need time to plan if they want to join the TRABI class.

You asked so we brought it back.  Explore the Shore 2014 is bigger and better than ever.   This will be a 3 day event starting at noon on September 26th in Atlantic City NJ and travelling the 27th and 28th along the historic byways of NJ, Delaware and Maryland.   Your entry fee gets you access to our opening ceremony lunch in Atlantic City, our closing ceremony meal at a famous location in Baltimore’s inner harbor (details to come).   Of course it also gets you all the fun and adventures you’ve come to expect from us along the way and a few surprises as well.

Additionally we are adding a fund raising component this year.  We will be asking all teams to raise a minimum of $50 for the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund.  Of course we encourage you to go above and beyond with your fund raising.  We are burning the midnight oil with a long running banger rally favorite Team Two Horsemen of the Carpocalypse to resurrect their 1952 Plymouth “Sandy” which was flooded during the hurricane and will be a centerpiece of the event.

Be sure to watch here and on our Facebook page for more info as it becomes available.  As always we intend to keep the event numbers low and manageable so get in early.   Registration absolutely positively closes Sunday September 7th, we are cutting things pretty close and we’ll need the remaining time to get your T shirts ordered.

This event is going to be very low focus on competition and high focus on exploration and group fun!  We hope to see you out there.

A couple of weeks ago I threw a teaser and event placeholder on our Facebook group for ETS 2014.  It was such a great event last year we couldn’t help but do it again.  But different.

I’m afraid I still don’t have all the info, the boss is working frantically to set up some really cool stuff but here’s what I know:

Timeframe: 3 day event, September 26, 27, 28.  We’ll be starting around noon on the 26th and ending around noon on the 28th.

Location:  We’re spreading it out this time.  the very loose plan is a start in Atlantic City, NJ, with Friday night spent in AC after an adventure in the city during the day.  Saturday will be some great scenic drives through Delaware hopefully ending near Assateague Island in Md.  If you aren’t familiar with this, do a quick search, it’s pretty cool.  Then Sunday a backtrack to the inner harbor in Baltimore for a finale group luncheon and celebration.

We’ll have some fun and games and challenges to keep you busy but this is generally a non-competition event and more for fun, friends and great road tripping.

Cost:  Subject to change right up until we open registration but we are aiming for $225 per 2 person team.  T-shirts and other goodies included as always.  There are a few group meals/functions included in this price as well.

Fundraiser:  Still hammering out the formal arrangement but we will be asking all teams to do a little fund raising for the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund.  Many people think that all is well but we are still actively rebuilding in NJ and much help is still needed.

As a special feature myself and team Two Horsemen of the Carpocalypse are frantically thrashing to finish our revival of Sandy, THOTC’s 1952 Plymouth which was flooded during Sandy and we are rebuilding to be their rally car.

I hope to have more details in the coming week and registration up and running but I wanted to get what info I had out there as we keep getting questions.  As with all of our events there will be a limit to entries, so if you are interested prepare to register!

First of many – post event blathering and random thoughts

Over the next few days I’ll be posting up a lot of info from the Saints 2 Sinners route 66 adventure but I wanted to kick off what is bound to be a bunch of the random blathering you have become accustomed to from me with a very special thank you.

I want to thank Justin and Karin Clements of Street Safari for their enduring patience and support.

We all get very excited on these events and we want more and have heads full of wild ideas.  As an event organizer it’s not always easy to pour your heart into an event just to have people come up to you and say “That was amazing, but do you know what would make it better….”

And we’ve all done it, which is why I don’t take it personally when it happens to me now.  But why Justin didn’t just tell me in his charmingly British way to just “Feck off” but instead took the time to explain to me how things worked and guide me in taking my crazy ideas and molding them into workable plans.   Almost everything that happens on these types of events comes from iterative learning.  You try, you fail, you fix, you try again, you refine, you try again, you modify.  Do you ever get it 100%? maybe.

I know for S2S I continued an iteration of the first challenge Justin had let me design for BABE rally.  I fixed a lot of things that I learned teams would misinterpret or loopholes of which they would take advantage and yet somehow it still fell short of what I planned.  Sure, it worked, but not how I thought it would.  People are unpredictable.  I have new things to work on for next time I guess.

Anyway, we all owe them our thanks, they have gone on hiatus from the rally business (I refuse to believe they are done) but without their tolerance, patience and friendship I would not be continuing the tradition.
